Chevening Scholarships 2027/28: Fully Funded UK Masters Scholarship

Commonwealth Masters Scholarships 202728 (1)

The Chevening Scholarships 2027–28 round is the UK government’s main route to a fully funded one-year master’s, and the window is almost shut. Applications opened on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. After that hour, the online system cannot be accessed. Successful applicants start in the United Kingdom in September or October 2027.

Chevening is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. It is not a grant for first degrees, and it is not a PhD award. It pays for one eligible taught master’s at a UK university, then expects scholars to return to the country of their award for at least two years. That return rule is the point of the programme: the UK is buying future leadership at home, not a permanent move to Britain.

If you already meet the rules, the next 48 hours are about finishing a complete application, not starting one from scratch. If you do not meet them, no essay will save the file. Eligibility is sifted before anyone reads your leadership story.

Overview of Chevening Scholarship 2027–28

Chevening began in 1983 and has grown into a global awards scheme. The UK government says there are more than 60,000 alumni worldwide, drawn from over 160 countries and territories. India alone has produced about 4,000 awardees since the programme started, and the British High Commission in New Delhi describes the India programme as the largest in the world. In the 2026 India cohort, women made up 68 percent of scholars, and more than 75 percent came from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, many of them first-generation learners.

Those figures matter because they correct a common myth. Chevening is competitive, but it is not reserved for applicants from capital cities, famous employers, or families that already study abroad. Readers score evidence of leadership, a clear course choice, and a credible plan to use the degree at home.

Who Can Apply for Chevening Scholarships 2027–28

You must meet every core rule. Missing one removes the application at the first sift.

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory, and apply through that country page.
  • If the award is from an Official Development Assistance-eligible country, be resident in an ODA-eligible country at the time you apply, and show a clear intention to support the country of award.
  • Agree to return to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme.
  • Have completed that undergraduate degree at least two years before the deadline. For this cycle, that means completion by 6 October 2024. You do not need the certificate in hand to submit, but you must have it before interview.
  • Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after the undergraduate degree, built up over a minimum of two years. Part-time, full-time, paid, and some voluntary work can count if it meets the current rules on the work-experience page.
  • Choose three different eligible UK master’s courses. At least one must become an unconditional offer by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST if you are selected.

There is no published age limit. A previous master’s does not automatically disqualify you from a second one. British citizens are not the target of this award, and applicants should not assume a partner or child can be funded to travel with them. Chevening funds the scholar only and advises against bringing dependants.

Work experience is the filter most people miscalculate. The 2,800 hours must come after the undergraduate degree, not during it. Internships completed before graduation usually do not count. Add the hours carefully, keep evidence, and do not round up. A file that fails the hour check never reaches a reading committee.

What Chevening Pays For, and What It Does Not

Chevening describes the scholarship as fully funded. The official list of award elements is:

  • Payment of tuition fees
  • A monthly living allowance for accommodation and everyday costs, with a higher rate in London than outside it, reviewed each year
  • Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route, for you only
  • The cost of an entry-clearance (visa) application, for you only
  • An arrival allowance
  • A departure allowance
  • A travel top-up allowance
  • A contribution of up to £75 toward TB testing, where a test is required

The exact stipend is confirmed in the final award letter, not in marketing posts. Older figures circulating online should not be treated as this year’s rate.

What is not covered is just as important. Chevening does not fund a partner or children. It does not pay university deposits, which remain your risk if you pay one before an award decision. Some course types, including many MBAs, have been subject to a tuition fee cap in recent cycles. If you are choosing an MBA, read the current course and finance guidance on chevening.org before you list it. Anything above a published cap is your cost.

A realistic total value for a one-year taught master’s often falls in the tens of thousands of pounds once tuition, stipend, flights, and visa costs are added. That is why incomplete applications are expensive mistakes. The money is real. The selection rate is low.

Chevening Scholarships 2027–28 Timeline

The dates below come from Chevening’s scholarship application timeline. Fellowship timelines are different. Do not mix the two.

  • 4 August 2026, 11:00 UTC: applications open
  • 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC: applications close
  • From October 2026: eligibility sifting
  • Mid-October 2026 to January 2027: independent reading committees assess eligible applications
  • Mid-February 2027: interview shortlist
  • March to April 2027: interviews at British embassies and high commissions
  • Mid-June 2027 onwards: results
  • 8 July 2027, 17:00 BST: deadline for at least one unconditional UK university offer
  • September or October 2027: studies begin

Shortlisted candidates must upload photo identification, the undergraduate certificate or diploma, and reference letters at least seven working days before the interview. Plan those documents now, even if the interview is months away.

Convert 11:00 UTC into your local time before you submit. In India, 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026 is 16:30. In Pakistan it is 16:00. In Nigeria and the UK in summer time, check the offset on the day, because clocks and UTC do not forgive a late click. Submit at least a day early. A form left on “draft” at 11:01 UTC is not an application.

How Selection Actually Works

Chevening does not rank applicants by grades alone. After the eligibility sift, reading committees score the essays and the professional record. Embassies and high commissions then build an interview shortlist. Panels look for leadership you have already used, not leadership you hope to develop in London.

A strong file usually shows four things.

  • A specific problem you have influenced, with your role separated from the team’s role
  • Evidence that other people acted because of you: a changed policy, a funded project, a trained cohort, a published investigation, a service that reached more users
  • Three courses that teach the method you lack, not three famous university names
  • A return plan that names the sector, the kind of role, and the people who benefit in your country of award

The application asks for a set of word-limited essays, typically covering leadership and influence, professional relationships, why these UK courses, and your career plan. Use the word limit on the live form. Do not paste a generic statement of purpose. Name the modules, research centres, or professional links that exist on those three courses and nowhere else you could study.

Course choice is a frequent reason strong candidates still look unready. The three courses must be eligible, different, and realistic for your academic background. One unconditional offer is required only after a successful interview, by 8 July 2027, but universities have their own deadlines long before that. Apply to the universities in parallel. Chevening will not chase an offer for you.

How to Apply Before The Portal Shuts

Use only the official route.

  1. Open https://www.chevening.org/apply/ and select your country of citizenship.
  2. Read that country page. Local eligibility notes sometimes add residence rules or priority sectors.
  3. Confirm the undergraduate completion date and the 2,800-hour count.
  4. Shortlist three eligible UK master’s courses and note each university’s own deadline and English-language rule.
  5. Complete every section, including the essays and referee details, and submit before 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC.
  6. Apply to the universities separately. An unconditional offer is not required on 6 October. It is required by 8 July 2027 if you win the interview.

English language scores, transcripts, and references have their own clocks. Some universities want a deposit that Chevening will not reimburse. Pay a deposit only if you can afford to lose it.

Mistakes That End an Application Early

  • Counting student placements or pre-graduation internships toward the 2,800 hours
  • Listing a part-time, distance, or two-year course that the current guidance does not allow
  • Choosing three courses that do not match the career plan in the essays
  • Submitting in local time after 11:00 UTC
  • Assuming a dual national can apply through any passport; use the country page that matches the award you want, and read the residence rule
  • Writing about wanting to settle in the UK; the return commitment is a condition, not a formality

Chevening Scholarships 2027–28 are a bet on people who will leave the UK and use the degree. If your real plan is immigration, this is the wrong scholarship, and the interview panel is trained to hear that gap.

Who Should Still Apply This Cycle

Apply if you are a citizen of an eligible country, finished your undergraduate degree by 6 October 2024, can document 2,800 hours of later work, and can name three UK master’s courses that change what you are able to do at home. The deadline is 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Guidance, country pages, and the application form are on https://www.chevening.org/.

If you miss this hour, the next cycle is a separate competition with its own dates. Do not wait on a reopening that Chevening has not announced.
