Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships: Full Funding for PhD and MPhil Study in 2027

Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships

A research degree in Australia is expensive if you pay your own way. Tuition for an international PhD can run well into six figures over the life of the candidature, and living costs in a capital city sit on top of that. Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships exist to remove most of that cost for the candidates the university wants most.

These awards are not coursework discounts. They are competitive living stipends plus a full tuition waiver for people admitted to a Doctor of Philosophy or a Master of Philosophy. In 2026 the full-time stipend is AUD 36,500 a year, tax-exempt, and indexed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recipients receive a higher rate of AUD 53,608. International students on a major Graduate Research School scholarship also receive a 100 percent tuition fee waiver for the standard duration of candidature, and Overseas Student Health Cover where a student visa requires it.

If you are planning a 2027 start, the timing matters. One of the main new pathways, the Graduate Research Talent Scheme, opened its first round on 5 October 2026 and closes on 2 November 2026 at 5:00pm. That window is short. The rest of this guide covers what the awards actually pay, who can apply, how the rounds work, and how to put a competitive file together.

What Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships Cover

Adelaide University is the institution formed from the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. Its graduate research scholarships are built on two core awards, plus a set of themed and partnership rounds.

The two flagship awards are:

  • Research Training Program Scholarships (RTPS), funded by the Australian Government and administered by the university.
  • Adelaide University Research Scholarships (AURS), funded by the university itself.

Both are available across disciplines for outstanding candidates admitted to a PhD or an MPhil. The published benefit package is the same in structure:

  • A living stipend for the duration of the scholarship.
  • A 100 percent tuition fee waiver for the duration of the award.
  • Extra allowances for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recipients.
  • A relocation allowance, and Overseas Student Health Cover where it applies.

The 2026 rates in the Conditions of Award are precise. Full-time students receive a tax-exempt stipend of AUD 36,500 per year. Half-time students receive a taxable stipend of AUD 18,250 per year. Half-time study is not available to international student visa holders. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander full-time recipients receive AUD 53,608, and half-time recipients AUD 26,804. Rates are indexed annually.

Duration is capped.

  • MPhil stipend and fee support run for up to two years full-time equivalent.
  • PhD stipend support runs for up to 3.5 years full-time equivalent. A PhD with an eligible research internship can extend the stipend to 3 years and 9 months.
  • The tuition fee waiver for a PhD runs for up to four years full-time equivalent.
  • Indigenous RTP stipend holders can receive stipend support for up to four years.

International students on a major scholarship administered by the Graduate Research School are entitled to a fee waiver for the standard duration of candidature: up to four years for a PhD, up to two years for an MPhil, and up to 1.5 years for a Master of Research.

Other allowances in the conditions include:

  • Relocation of up to AUD 1,000 for domestic students and up to AUD 1,500 for international students, toward the most direct one-way travel and removal costs to Adelaide.
  • Standard single Overseas Student Health Cover for international students on a subclass 500 visa, for up to 30 months on an MPhil and up to 54 months on a PhD.
  • An early submission allowance, capped at the equivalent of up to two months of stipend, if the thesis is submitted before the stipend ends.

The stipend is paid fortnightly in arrears into an Australian bank account in the student’s name. Full-time recipients are expected to devote about 40 hours a week to the degree. Paid work is allowed only if it does not slow progress, and the university will not extend the scholarship because of employment.

The Main Scholarship Pathways

Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships are not a single form with one closing date. They are offered through competitive rounds, project rounds, and a small number of always-open pathways.

Merit and major stipend awards

AURS and RTPS are the awards most applicants mean when they search for a fully funded PhD scholarship in Australia. Selection is competitive and based on academic merit, research experience, and fit with the university’s research goals. Successful applicants typically hold a bachelor degree with honours, or an equivalent qualification with a substantial research component, plus evidence of research outputs such as publications.

Domestic applicants include Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens. International applicants from any country can be considered, provided they meet admission rules, including English language requirements, by the relevant closing date. Incomplete qualifications are not counted unless evidence of completion is supplied by the deadline.

Graduate Research Talent Scheme

This pathway is for outstanding domestic applicants, and for international applicants who have already completed a relevant Australian or New Zealand qualification, commencing in 2027. It covers all research disciplines. You can propose your own project, choose one from the project listings, or design a project with a supervisor.

Published rounds are:

  • Round 1: Monday 5 October 2026 to Monday 2 November 2026 at 5:00pm.
  • Round 2: mid-February 2027 to late March 2027.
  • Round 3: mid-July 2027 to mid-August 2027.

Applications are assessed centrally for both admission and the scholarship. Follow the steps on the how to apply for a research degree page.

Signature Research Theme scholarship round

This is a project-based round tied to five signature themes: Creative and Cultural; Defence and National Security; Food, Agriculture and Wine; Personal and Societal Health; and Sustainable Green Transition. It is open to domestic and international applicants for PhD and MPhil entry.

Expressions of interest open on 31 August 2027 and close on 30 September 2027. You must have completed your qualifying degree, or be on track to complete it, by 28 February 2028 if you are an international applicant outside Australia, or by 31 March 2028 if you are in Australia. The process is multi-stage. An incomplete expression of interest is not accepted. Shortlisted applicants are invited to a formal admission and scholarship application after interview. Submit a separate expression of interest for each project.

China Scholarship Council partnership

The China Scholarship Council–Adelaide University Partnership Scholarship Program funds PhD study for successful candidates from the People’s Republic of China. Adelaide University applications run from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027, for candidates commencing between July 2027 and June 2028.

The process has three stages. First, apply to Adelaide University and select sponsorship from the China Scholarship Council under financial support. Successful applicants receive a conditional offer around March 2027, and the university nominates candidates to the Council. Second, apply to the Council, usually around April to May 2027, via the China Scholarship Council. Third, wait for final notification from the Graduate Research School. If Adelaide University does not nominate you, and you still win a Council award, you are responsible for full tuition and other costs. Enquiries go to research.scholarships@adelaide.edu.au.

Out-of-round and targeted awards

Some support is not tied to a single annual deadline.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants for PhD and MPhil can apply at any time.
  • The Master of Research Indigenous Scholarship supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates in the Master of Research.
  • Master of Research Assistance Scholarships support eligible domestic students who would qualify for Austudy or Youth Allowance. Forms go to research.scholarships@adelaide.edu.au.
  • Externally funded awards, top-up scholarships, research internship scholarships, and travel scholarships appear through the year on the scholarships site and in the graduate research newsletter.

Who Is Eligible For Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships

Eligibility has two layers: admission to the degree, and the scholarship rules themselves.

For the degree, a PhD or MPhil applicant normally needs a strong honours result or a master’s degree with a substantial research thesis. Relevant research experience and publications can strengthen a file, but they do not replace the entry standard. International applicants must meet English language requirements by the scholarship closing date. Qualifications still in progress are not assessed unless completion evidence arrives by that date.

Scholarship-specific rules from the Conditions of Award include:

  • You must be eligible to enrol as a domestic or overseas student in an eligible research program.
  • You must not already hold an equivalent or higher research degree.
  • You must not be receiving an equivalent Commonwealth award that already offsets your fees.
  • You must commence within the round’s intake window. Domestic and onshore international recipients generally start within three months. Offshore international recipients should start as soon as visa and travel allow.
  • Currently enrolled students seeking an RTP award need minimum candidature remaining: about two years for a PhD and six months for an MPhil. Preference often goes to new applicants.

A structured CV is expected and materially affects ranking. Use the university’s structured CV template. It forces you to show grades, research outputs, relevant experience, and achievements in a format selectors can compare.

How Selection Actually Works

Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships go to the highest-ranked eligible applicants. Rank is not a single GPA cut-off. Selectors weigh academic results, the research component of prior study, publications and other research outputs, alignment with supervisors and strategic themes, and the quality of the proposed project.

That has practical consequences.

  • A first-class honours result, or a master’s thesis with a high grade, is the baseline in most competitive rounds.
  • A paper in a recognised journal, even as second author, often separates similar transcripts.
  • A supervisor who has already agreed to take you, and who has capacity, is close to essential. The university is explicit that supervisor capacity is part of the decision.
  • Project-round applicants are ranked against the project brief as well as against each other. A generic proposal copied across three projects is easy to spot.

International rounds are especially tight. The university has said in past guidance that it receives hundreds of applications for a small number of international awards. Applying only to the scholarship, without a supervisor conversation, is a weak strategy.

Application Steps That Reduce Avoidable Rejection

The formal path is an online admission and scholarship application. The practical path is longer.

  1. Read the round rules on the research scholarships page and confirm you are in the correct domestic or international stream.
  2. Check entry requirements for the PhD or MPhil, including English scores, on the research degree application page.
  3. Identify a supervisor or a funded project. Contact only people whose recent papers match your topic. Attach a one-page proposal and your CV. Ask whether they have capacity in the round you are targeting.
  4. Complete the structured CV. List grades subject by subject where the template asks. Do not bury publications in a narrative paragraph.
  5. Prepare evidence of completed qualifications. If your thesis is under examination, check whether the round will accept it. Many will not.
  6. Submit before the deadline. The Talent Scheme Round 1 cutoff is 5:00pm on 2 November 2026, not midnight. Late files are not assessed.
  7. If you are applying to more than one project in a project round, submit a separate expression of interest for each, within the character limits.

After submission, outcomes are released on the timetable for that round. Offers name the exact benefits. Do not assume every allowance in the conditions booklet is in your letter until it is written there.

What It Costs to Live in Adelaide on the Stipend

The 2026 full-time stipend of AUD 36,500 is designed as a living allowance, not a wage that matches a professional salary. It is tax-exempt for full-time recipients, which improves its real value. Rent, transport, and food in Adelaide are generally lower than in Sydney or Melbourne, which is one reason the same national RTP rate stretches further here than in the larger east-coast cities.

It still requires a budget. Shared housing is the norm for stipend holders. The relocation allowance will not cover a full international move for a family. Partners and children are not funded by the core scholarship. International recipients should price Overseas Student Health Cover against the single policy the award provides, and budget separately if they need family cover.

Half-time stipends are taxable. Anyone considering half-time enrolment should get independent tax advice, because the award can interact with other income.

Why Applicants Target Adelaide

Adelaide University’s research degree pitch rests on a few concrete points, not on slogans.

The stipend rate matches the national Research Training Program settings, so the living allowance is competitive with other Australian universities using the same base rate. The fee waiver for international major-scholarship holders removes the largest single cost. Signature themes map onto real industry and policy demand in South Australia: wine and agriculture, defence, health, and energy transition. The China Scholarship Council partnership is a defined route for Chinese PhD candidates rather than a generic international pool.

The city is smaller than Sydney or Melbourne, which suits candidates who want lower rent and shorter commutes during a 3.5-year doctorate. It is a weaker fit if your field depends on a dense private-sector cluster that only exists on the east coast. Check recent supervisor output, not the brochure, before you commit.

Common Reasons Strong Applicants Miss Out

Most unsuccessful files fail for ordinary reasons.

  • The qualifying degree was not finished by the closing date, so it could not be scored.
  • English evidence arrived after the deadline.
  • There was no supervisor support, or the named supervisor had no capacity.
  • The CV did not use the structured template, so research outputs were hard to compare.
  • The applicant applied to an international round without meeting the domestic-round exception for recent Adelaide or UniSA graduates.
  • The project expression of interest exceeded the character limit or skipped required questions.

None of these are fixed by a higher GPA after the deadline. They are fixed by reading the round page twice and submitting a complete file early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Adelaide University Graduate Research Scholarships fully funded? For major Graduate Research School awards, yes in the standard sense used by Australian universities: a living stipend plus a full tuition waiver for the standard duration, with health cover and a small relocation allowance for eligible international students. They do not pay airfares for dependants, family health cover, or a settling-in grant beyond the relocation cap.

Can coursework master’s graduates apply? A coursework master’s with little or no thesis is often not enough on its own. Selectors look for a substantial research component or an honours degree. If your master’s was coursework-only, ask the admissions team whether it meets the research-degree entry standard before you invest in a scholarship file.

Is the stipend enough to bring a family? The core award is for the student. A single stipend of AUD 36,500 will not comfortably support a partner and children in Adelaide without other income or savings. Plan for that before you accept.

Do I apply for admission and the scholarship separately? For the main rounds, no. You submit an admission and scholarship application together. Some out-of-round and external awards have their own forms.

What if I already started the degree without a scholarship? Enrolled students can be considered for some RTP awards if enough candidature remains, but commencing applicants are often preferred. Check the current round rules rather than assuming a mid-candidature top-up exists.

What to Do This Month

If you are eligible for the Graduate Research Talent Scheme, Round 1 is open now and closes on 2 November 2026 at 5:00pm. That is the nearest hard date. Chinese PhD applicants should also note the Council partnership window from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027.

Start with the official pages, not with a third-party summary. Read the research scholarships hub, the Conditions of Award, and the application steps. Then write to one supervisor whose recent work matches yours, using the structured CV. Scholarship rounds reward complete, comparable files more than they reward last-minute ambition.

Official details sit on the Adelaide University research scholarships page. Conditions of award for the main stipend scholarships are in the RTPS and AURS Conditions of Award (revised May 2026).
