The university also points to living costs. It says rents and the cost of living are up to 65% cheaper than in London, citing QS Student Cities 2025. A partial fee award plus a lower-cost city is a different calculation from a larger headline scholarship in a more expensive city.
The published 2027 schemes are tuition fee awards. They are credited to the fee account. They are not a monthly living stipend, and they do not cover flights, visa costs or rent. Budget for those separately.
Always check the course page for the fee, then subtract the award. Some programmes are excluded. The regulations, not the summary page, decide that.
Undergraduate Scholarships for 2027 Entry
Two university-funded schemes dominate undergraduate funding for international students.
Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships: £7,000 a year
The standard award is £7,000 per academic year towards tuition fees, for the duration of the course, starting September 2027. Students on a placement year who pay reduced fees receive the scholarship on a pro-rata basis.
You are considered automatically once you apply for a course. There is no separate scholarship form and no single closing date for the award itself. Awards can be allocated early in the cycle, so an early course application is an advantage.
You still have to meet the course deadlines. To be eligible you must:
- Be assessed as international for fee purposes.
- Hold an offer for an eligible undergraduate degree at the Newcastle city centre campus for 2027/28. Malaysia and Singapore campus programmes are outside this scheme.
- Be domiciled in an eligible country or region.
- Submit the course application through UCAS by the equal consideration deadline of 13 January 2027.
- If the university makes an offer by 31 March 2027, accept Newcastle as your firm or insurance choice by 3 May 2027.
- Register as a full-time student in 2027/28. The award cannot be deferred.

Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships: up to 50% off fees
This is the competitive undergraduate award. Newcastle is offering 30 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships for 2027 entry, worth up to 50% off tuition fees for the full duration of the degree.
You need an offer for an eligible full-time undergraduate programme at the city centre campus, international fee status, and a minimum of ABB at A level or equivalent. The same UCAS date applies: apply by 13 January 2027, and accept as firm or insurance by 3 May 2027 if the offer arrives by 31 March 2027.
Selection looks at academic ability, commitment to studies and the quality of the application. The university may ask for more information.
The scholarship application is separate. Submit it through the Apply to Newcastle portal under scholarship applications. The closing date is 2 April 2027. Late applications are not considered.

Master’s and Taught Postgraduate Scholarships
Taught postgraduate awards are larger in cash terms than the standard undergraduate discount, but they usually cover one year rather than three.
Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships: £8,000
Eligible master’s applicants are considered automatically and can receive an £8,000 tuition fee award for September 2027. The condition that catches people out is the deposit rule. You must accept the degree offer and pay the tuition fee deposit in full by 2 August 2027.

Country awards of £10,000: India, Pakistan and Nigeria
Newcastle is also running Future Leaders scholarships for postgraduate study:

What About PhD Funding?
The over-1,000 figure on the global scholarships page refers to the international and EU package built around taught degrees. It is not a promise of 1,000 fully funded doctorates.
Newcastle has previously offered a Newcastle University Overseas Research Scholarship that covered the gap between the home and international PhD fee for up to three years, with a limited number of awards. That scheme has been published on its own cycle. If you are applying for a PhD starting in 2027, treat the taught scholarships above as irrelevant to your fee status and check the postgraduate funding search and your academic school for studentships. Research council and school studentships are often advertised with the project, not through the Vice-Chancellor pages.
Pathway Students
Students progressing from Newcastle University International Study Centre can be considered for a related Vice-Chancellor’s award if they meet domicile, fee-status and course rules. Undergraduate progression awards are published at £7,000 a year. Postgraduate progression awards are published at £8,000, or £10,000 for applicants domiciled in India, Nigeria and Pakistan. These are still partial fee awards, and Turkey-domiciled applicants are only considered if they are self-funding.
How Selection Actually Works
Automatic does not mean everyone from an eligible country receives the discount. You need an offer on an eligible course, the right fee status, and, for several awards, proof that you have accepted and paid on time. The university has said awards may be allocated early. Waiting until the UCAS January deadline is allowed for equal consideration. Waiting until summer is a weaker position if the automatic pot is being drawn down through the year.
Excellence awards are different. They are capped, academic, and judged on the scholarship application as well as the course offer. ABB or equivalent is a floor for the undergraduate excellence scheme, not a guarantee.
A few practical rules cut across the schemes:
- Fee status is international. Home-fee applicants use other bursaries.
- The award is tied to 2027/28 registration. It cannot be deferred.
- Reduced fees in a placement year reduce the scholarship pro rata.
- Another Newcastle tuition discount can block an award. Read the regulations before stacking offers.

Miss the deposit date and the automatic postgraduate award is the one most likely to fail, even if the academic offer still stands.
What the Money Does and Does Not Cover
On a three-year undergraduate degree, £7,000 a year is £21,000 off tuition before any placement adjustment. A 50% excellence award is worth more, and the exact cash value depends on the course fee. On a one-year master’s, £8,000 or £10,000 is a single reduction, unless the programme is longer.
None of these published awards is a full tuition waiver for a typical international fee, and none is a living stipend. Newcastle’s own pitch is that the city is substantially cheaper than London. That helps the rent line. It does not replace a maintenance budget. UK student visa rules still require you to show funds for living costs. A fee discount does not count as cash in your bank account.
How to Apply for Newcastle University international scholarships 2027 Without Losing the Award
Use this order.
- Check the course is eligible and note the international fee on the course page. Search courses from the international fees and funding page.
- Apply for the degree first. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS. Postgraduate applications go through Newcastle’s applicant portal.
- If you want an excellence award, wait until you have an offer, then submit the scholarship application before 2 April 2027 (undergraduate) or 8 June 2027 (postgraduate).
- Track the acceptance rules. Undergraduate applicants who want the automatic award need the May acceptance deadline if their offer arrives by the end of March. Postgraduate applicants need the August deposit deadline.

A Realistic Way to Judge The Offer
Newcastle University international scholarships for 2027 entry are broad rather than fully funded. The automatic awards will not wipe out international fees. They are large enough, especially over a three-year degree, to change the cost of a Russell Group place in a city that is cheaper than London. The excellence awards are the ones that materially cut the fee, and there are far fewer of them.
