Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28 in UK: Fully Funded Scholarship Guide and How to Win a Place

Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28 is already open, and the first deadline is closer than most applicants realise. US citizens living in the United States must submit a complete application by 14 October 2026. Everyone else has until either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course. Miss the relevant date by a minute and the file is out.

That urgency is worth taking seriously. Gates Cambridge is one of the few awards that pays the full cost of a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge and then adds travel, visa costs and a living stipend on top. Around 70 full-cost scholarships are offered each year to applicants from outside the UK. About two-thirds go to PhD students. The rest support one-year full-time postgraduate courses. Roughly a third of the awards sit in the US round; the rest are in the international round.

Overview of Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Gates Cambridge was created in October 2000 by a US$210 million donation from the Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. The first class arrived in October 2001. The mission has not changed: build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.

That sentence is not branding filler. It is a selection rule. Academic brilliance alone does not win this award. Panels also look for a clear reason for the chosen course, evidence that you already act to improve other people’s lives, and leadership potential that is specific rather than vague.

Who Can Apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28

Eligibility is narrower than many roundup posts suggest, and wider than others.

You can apply if you are:

  • A citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • A dual citizen of the UK and another country
  • Applying for an eligible postgraduate course at Cambridge, not a second BA or an undergraduate degree
  • Applying for a new course, even if you are already a Cambridge student (you cannot use the award to fund the remainder of a course you have already started)

backpack

You cannot apply if you are a UK-only citizen, or if your course is on the exclusion list.

Eligible study includes:

  • PhD, full-time or part-time (part-time doctoral funding is a continuing pilot)
  • Full-time MLitt
  • Full-time one-year postgraduate courses, including many MPhil, MSc, MRes and LLM degrees

Courses Gates Cambridge does not fund include any undergraduate degree, MASt courses, part-time degrees other than the PhD, and a set of professional or non-standard programmes: MBA, EMBA, MFin, BusD, PGCE, MBBChir Clinical Studies, the Graduate Course in Medicine, MD, Doctor of Education, PGCert, PGDip, MSt and the Master of Conservation of Easel Painting. Check the course page and the official eligibility notes before you invest a month in an application.

There is no published minimum GPA. Academic excellence is judged across the whole file, including references. There is also no separate Gates Cambridge English test score, but the University of Cambridge has its own language conditions, and those still apply.

Scholarship Benefits: What the Money Actually Covers

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a full-cost award, not a partial fee discount. Official core components, confirmed on the programme page, are:

  • The University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate for your course and fee status
  • A maintenance allowance for a single student of £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026–27 rate, paid pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months
  • Up to four years of that award for PhD scholars
  • One economy single airfare at the beginning of the course and one at the end
  • Inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge

The University’s own funding search lists the annual package in a broad band of about £35,000 to £68,000, because the composition fee varies by course and because discretionary extras can lift the total. Treat the £23,152 figure as the published maintenance rate, not as the whole award, and expect the Trust to update the allowance for the year you are in residence.

Discretionary funding, applied for separately and not guaranteed, includes:

  • Academic development funding, from up to £750 to up to £4,000 depending on course length, for conferences and courses
  • A Dependent Children Allowance, up to £12,793 a year for one child and up to £18,244 a year for two or more children
  • Continuation of the normal maintenance allowance during approved PhD fieldwork
  • Up to six months of maintenance if you intermit for maternity or paternity leave
  • Hardship funding for unforeseen difficulties

No funding is provided for a partner. Bench fees and the cost of scientific equipment are not covered. The Trust expects core course costs of that kind to be met by the department. If a public funder such as UKRI awards you fees, you should accept that award; the Trust will not double-pay and may share fee and maintenance costs.

Application Deadlines for 2027/28 Entry

Applications opened on 11 September 2026. There are two rounds. You do not choose the more convenient one.

US citizens resident in the United States

This round is only for applicants who are both US citizens and currently living in the United States. US citizens studying or working overseas apply in the later round. If you are eligible for the October round, you cannot wait for December.

  • Applications open: 11 September 2026
  • Deadline: Wednesday 14 October 2026, 11:59pm UK time
  • Departmental ranking: late October to November 2026
  • All applicants notified: by 11:59pm UK time on Monday 14 December 2026
  • Panel interviews: Friday 22 and Saturday 23 January 2027
  • Offers: by early February 2027
  • Acceptance window: 72 hours after the offer

All other eligible applicants

This is the round for the large majority of candidates, including international applicants and US citizens overseas. Your deadline is the Course Funding Deadline in the University Course Directory, not a single Gates date.

  • Applications open: 11 September 2026
  • Deadline: Tuesday 8 December 2026 or Wednesday 6 January 2027, 11:59pm UK time, depending on the course
  • Departmental ranking: December to February
  • All applicants notified: by 11:59pm UK time on Monday 8 March 2027
  • Panel interviews: Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 March 2027
  • Offers: by early April 2027
  • Acceptance window: 72 hours after the offer

The full application, including every reference, must be in by the deadline. Late files are not accepted. If you are unsure which round applies, email info@gatescambridge.org before you submit. The timetable lives at gatescambridge.org/apply/timeline.

How to Apply

There is no separate Gates Cambridge form. You apply once, through the University of Cambridge Graduate Application Portal, for admission to a course and a College place, and you complete the Gates Cambridge subsection of the funding section. Start at the University’s postgraduate admissions pages: postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk.

The Gates subsection asks four questions mapped to the selection criteria:

  • How your education and experience show academic excellence: about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters
  • Why this course at Cambridge, and how it fits your plans: about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters
  • An example of your commitment to improving the lives of others, and why it matters: about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters
  • An example of your leadership and the impact it will enable: about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters

You also need a Gates Cambridge reference, separate from the two academic references required for admission. The referee should be someone of standing who can rank you against a real comparison group and speak to intellectual ability, course choice, commitment to others and leadership. A friend or relative is not acceptable. Brief them properly. A generic “excellent student” letter wastes the only document written specifically for this competition.

PhD applicants must include a research proposal if it is not already part of the admission documents. You do not need a confirmed supervisor before you apply. You cannot edit the application after submission. Gates Cambridge does not pay the University application fee; fee-waiver rules, if any apply to you, sit with Postgraduate Admissions.

Application steps, in order:

  1. Choose an eligible course and read its funding deadline in the Course Directory.
  2. Identify a College preference and prepare admission documents, including the research proposal if you are applying for a PhD.
  3. Line up two academic referees and one Gates Cambridge referee well before the deadline.
  4. Draft the four funding answers against the criteria, with named examples rather than abstract claims.
  5. Submit the full portal application, admission plus funding, by 11:59pm UK time on your deadline.
  6. Confirm that every reference has arrived. A missing reference is an incomplete application.

The how-to page is here: How to apply. Other Cambridge funding you may also be considered for is listed at student-funding.cam.ac.uk.

How Selectors Decide

Departments rank eligible funding applicants first. Only a shortlist reaches the Gates Cambridge panels. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed. Offers then go out, with a 72-hour acceptance window.

The four criteria, in the Trust’s own words, are outstanding intellectual ability, reasons for choice of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential. A strong file usually does four things well.

  • It shows academic excellence with evidence: grades, research, publications, prizes, or unusually demanding work, explained rather than listed.
  • It explains why this course, in this department, at Cambridge, is the logical next step, not a prestige label.
  • It gives one concrete episode of service or impact, including what you did, what changed, and what you learned.
  • It treats leadership as influence with consequences: a team, a project, a campaign, a lab, a classroom, not a job title.

Admission and funding are separate decisions. You can receive a Cambridge offer before you hear about Gates Cambridge, and you can be admitted without being funded.

Practical Mistakes That Knock out Good Candidates

Most unsuccessful files fail for ordinary reasons.

  • Applying for an excluded course, then discovering it after the deadline
  • Using the international deadline when you are a US citizen resident in the United States
  • Submitting the portal form and assuming referees will “get to it”
  • Writing the leadership and service answers as a CV in prose
  • Treating the 200-word academic answer as a second personal statement
  • Ignoring College choice and course fit, which still matter to the department that ranks you

If the US round is your route, the useful work left is reference chasing and a hard edit, not a new research idea. If you are on the December or January deadline, you still have time to tighten the proposal and the four answers, but not time to start from zero in the final week.

What To Do This Week

Open the Course Directory, confirm your course is eligible, and write down the exact funding deadline. Then open the portal and the official criteria page before you draft a word of the funding answers. The Trust’s own pages remain the authority if any secondary guide, including this one, drifts from the latest rate or date: gatescambridge.org.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28 will not reward a generic “I have always wanted to study at Cambridge” essay. It rewards a specific course, a documented record, and a credible plan to improve other people’s lives after the degree. If that is the application you can write, the deadline in front of you is the only one that matters.

The official programme page is the place to confirm figures before you apply: The Scholarship. The live timetable is here: Timeline.
